Check frequently asked questions about Pet Health

Open Question: hello all. I have a ring worm problem. See more for details. Thanks!?

Hello, my friends dog recently contracted a ringworm. The family vet said that he (the dog) was probably exposed to it from the lawn. I look several treatments to receive rid of the ringworm from a pet. but is thier anyway to treat the lawn? Is it the same as treating flame ants or red ants? I wasnt entirely sure where to categorize this question. I tried looking below lawn treatment and health. Any info or referral would be much appreciated. glad Holidays!

Resolved Question: GOOD DEAL OR NO?(kinda long)?

So i have been looking for a dog for a while and yesterday i was at the pet store (i have been to shelters too so none of those comments) but there was this boston terrier there who was a little older then every the other puppies by probably a few months but that was one of the breeds i was looking at so i took her out to play :) she was so sweet she got excited and played with her ball but then calmed down and walked over and lay in my lap giving me kisses. BUT i noticed she had a bad toe. I asked about it and they said she was born with it and she has seen the vet about it and its just a birth defect but it has kept ppl from buying her. I looked at her and named her Tootsie (after her bald toe) and didn't think it was a big deal i asked what vaccines and shots or w/e she has gotton and they said she has been kept up to date on al shots and everything she has been micro chipped and she comes with 2 warranties one 3 year warranty for any joint problems and a 1 year health warranty(they showed me every the paper work in her folder and her bloodline). Then i asked the price and he showed me the back of her folder that had a TOTALLY OVER PRICED NUMBER ON IT $1,500 i have done my research and a boston terrier is normally priced around 600-800 dollars at pet stores. THEN he said "BUT SINCE SHE IS GETTING TO OLD TO BE HERE ANYMORE WE ARE PRACTICALLY GIVING HER AWAY for $380! I was kinda shocked i felt that was a really good price for a pup with every her shots who cares if she isn't a new born puppy and has a bumm toe what do you think? P.S. he also said i could talk him down on it or make a deal depending on what else i bought as well AND if i wanted i could do a 90 day credit card to pay so it felt like nothing. Everyone is saying i dont care about that it has never had a good life well its the same case for shelter pups and they receive a chance at a new beginning with a new home why shouldn't a needy pet store pup receive a chance. I know a breeder will find a pup a good home and pet stores dont give a hoot what they give them to as long as they sell sell sell. so why not give a pup a good home that might never receive the chance

Open Question: My gf has to put her cat to sleep. I am at a loss for what to say or do.?

My gf adopted her brother's 18 year old after he was murdered a year ago. The cat is wonderful but its health problems have taken a serious decline over the last couple of months. Today, my gf made the difficult decision to put the cat to snooze. She is still having a difficult time with the sudden loss of her brother last year and the thought of putting his cat down only makes it harder. On top of it, one of her two rabbits died less than two weeks ago accidentally. She is picking up medicine this afternoon to make the car ride less traumatic and then steer her to the vet to have him put her to snooze. Personally, I have dealt with death several times over in my life but only twice when it comes to the loss of a beloved pet. And I didn't feel that I said or did enough with the loss of her rabbit. I feel really lame for asking this, but can anyone offer some guidance on what I can say or offer to do for her? She does plan to have the cat cremated and the ashes scattered along with her brother's when the time comes. 'I'm Sorry' was about the only thing I could mutter with the loss of her rabbit and I just felt stupid afterward. I wanted to be able to say or do anything else than just 'I'm Sorry'

Open Question: Essay Revision. Public Literacy.?

Hi my writing teacher marks me down a lot on awkwardness and cohesiveness. Here is a rough draft of my essay it would be great if I could receive some feedback on it. Thanks Here is my prompt. You must analyze an aspect of the public sphere- advertising, fashion, film, television, sports, amusement parks, or any number of things available for public consumption. Your task is to write an essay that (1) explores the underlying and often ignored messages (of the ad, clothing, show, film, park) and (2) discuss the impact this has on our society as a whole. (3) What does our acceptance of this element in our culture say about us as Americans? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks. Essay: Many adults look movies as a way to educate the youth about morals, right from wrong, good from bad. This is what is expected from kids’s movies. What people don’t often realize is the hidden messages, the propaganda that is intermingled within kids’s movies. Movies like Finding Nemo convey environmental messages to the youth. With these movies our nation is becoming more environmentally aware of issues occurring throughout the world. The need of the underlying messages says that we Americans are too ignorant, that we must be educated through entertainment. Finding Nemo highlights the importance of wild animals being free as a hidden message. The movie allows the child to connect to wild animals by humanizing the animal characters within the film. With this connection, the kids could then relate to the struggles Nemo faces. By showing that being captivated impeded with the search for his dad, kids understood how life would be if they were lost or separated. The movie appeals to the emotions of the child through the mood and expressions presented by the humanized character, allowing them to look Nemo’s misery. The kids then understood why it is not right to captivate pets. This hidden message told kids that the animals have emotions like people. Humanizing the characters helped convey the hidden messages in Finding Nemo. With the help of humanized characters, it also became apparent that pollution was an issue the film was trying to address. By familiarizing the coral reef with home the kids were able to look that pollution is not native to the ocean. The bulk of man-made items gave the impression that humans deprive the ocean of its natural beauty. An apparent contrast was made between pristine and polluted areas of the oceans with foreign objects. The movie also made it clear that the ocean is a receptacle of everything that is flushed. Such as when Nemo was sent down the drain, he easily managed to make his way back to the ocean. The significance of this message conveyed to kids was to be cautious of what goes down the drain since kids are now aware that it will go to the ocean. Finding Nemo helped the youth experience the truth that goes on underneath the ocean. kids who watch the movie are aware of issues concerning the ocean. Flushing the toilet or washing their hands will receive them thinking, “How would Nemo like this”. They will have a different way of looking at things that could possibly hurt the fishes’ health. The strong emotional effect the movie was presented with will be existent while carrying out any task that may hurt Nemo. Although there still is pollution and people still buy wild fishes, people are aware of hurt that they could be causing to the wild life. This awareness produced by the movie leaves guilt behind their wrongful doings to the environment. Hollywood’s contribution to the film proved to be effective throughout our nation due to the popularity of the animation figure—Nemo. Hollywood’s necessity to produce the film to advocate environmental awareness concludes that we Americans are too ignorant to face reality. We must be educated through entertainment. This shows that producers feel they should take matters in their possess hands for the sake of our Earth. Many people underestimate the issues occurring through our environment, when in reality these issues are a threat to life. These environmental messages can be found through man kids’s movies. When analyzes, movies are a good medium for expressing feeling considering its popularity amongst Americans. Finding Nemo was a great “Hit” in the United States. Nemo became a known figure through out America’s homes. The popularity of this film made the environmental message possible. People are aware of the cruelty in captivating wild animals as a materialistic object. They now look the ocean as someone else’s home. They respect the ocean and are aware of the hazards to the oceans. Even though the film was intended for the youth, most people were informed or influenced by the message conveyed through Finding Nemo.By Michael O.

Voting Question: World of Warcraft- Warlocks?

I am a Warlock and only level 20... So far I have noticed that Warlocks have TONS AND TONS of spells/moves... more then any other Class I have played. Most of these Spells are just the same as each other... (Example: Fear, Howl of Terror) and others are just soo much... theres SO many spells, DoTs, curses, and SOOOOOOOOOO many different possible ways of fighting. That is why I have to ask, because there are so many different ways to battle and so many spells and you can use different stratigies... how do I know which one is the best, how do I know how to use which spells at their best times? So far every I do is Drain Life for myself and then tranfer that to my pet with occational DoTs and thats basically it... sometimes I will Drain Soul if I need a Shard but its basically health funnel, drain life, occational DoTs and I am not sure what to do when Also, when do u use fear when do u use Howl of Terror

Open Question: Has anyone ever bought a healthy dog from a pet store?

No I am NOT considering buying a puppy from a pet store, I do NOT support puppy mills in ANY way. I think rescue and responsible show breeders are the way to go. But I am just curious has anyone on here or do you know anyone that has bought a puppy from a pet store and it had no health issues?

Resolved Question: What can I do/ I'm at my wits' end? my bf DENIES our cat is a health risk to baby (and us)?

okay i posted last night but i still am racking my brain. i cant let go of this worry and i think i have valid reasons. we have a 4-month-old daughter. we also have a cat. the cat is indoor but since about a year and a half ago has had on again off again worms---tape worms. anyways we've taken her to the vet before, they'd treat her, but lately we havent and bam she has them again. so here's where I'm going crazy; My boyfriend wont "let' me take her to the vet. he says shes "his' cat bc he got her from his mom's who has had her for several yrs. I dont care about that but it bothers me he wont take her himself or let me. he claims that he can treat her at home. well every he gives her is a cheap delfleaing treatment and otc worm pill and it doesnt work. his mom came over today. she acts like this cat is a person. I told her my concerns about the cat giving it to our 4-month-old baby girl, who I am more concerned about. she says "no its not contagious' well Ive looked SO much stuff on it, and so many articles say it is! then I called an pediatric advice nurse and a vet tech, and BOTH said though unlikely, it can be spread. i am worried bc the cat is around the baby a lot, i try to keep ehr away but its a tiny apartment. anyhow, my bf refuses to hear to me. He falt out denies its a health risk. His mom denies it. How can they both be right, and everybody else---including a vet tech and advice nurse---be wrong? I am probably going to take the cat to the vet tomorrow without even telling him. But it makes me so mad that i have to do that. and i'm also going to make an appointment with my baby's pedi to be tested through stool sample just so I can have peace of mind. I am livid that he denies facts as well as his stupid animal freak mom. She claims she's equiavalant to a vet just bc she spent years training horses as a HOBBY not a profession. I'm also going to have my pedi write him a note, or leave him a message stating it IS transmissble from cats to humans, particularly kids (which I'm assuming includes young infants) how would you feel if this was your baby? what would you do? am i over-reacting? and why wont he hear to me? I almost want to leave him bc of this and stay at my parents' home, but over there is no haven either bc my dad smokes inside the home and wont go outside for anyone, not even my baby. and they too have pets---but ive never heard of them having worms. and i know the otc stuff isnt working bc it keeps coming back like every few weeks and i know the otc stuff isnt working bc it keeps coming back like every few weeks please help any moms out there please!

Resolved Question: Where should I buy a puppy?

My family (mainly my mom and I) is thinking about buying a pet puppy (not for showing or other competitions) and they put me in charge of looking for one. We are looking for a tiny dog like a Maltese, Papillon, Shih Tzu or Havanese (other tiny breeds would be fine, but my mom prefers those). I found some of my options, but it seems like my mom and I don't agree on any of them. Buying from a Breeder: I would adore to receive a puppy from a breeder, but they cost a lot of money. We really don't care about the puppy being "perfect" according to the breed standards or purebred, as long as it's healthy. Also, are purebred dogs more prone to genetic defects due to inbreeding? That's what a family pal told me. Pet store: I read about puppy mills, so this is definitely one of my last resorts. The puppies are more likely to be sick since they’re sold for money. My mom claims that millions of people have bought from pet stores, and they haven’t had any trouble. Shelter: My mom wants a baby dog, which seems to be difficult to find in shelters (at least the ones close us). She also is below the impression that every shelter dogs have health problems, and they're just the dogs that "nobody wanted". Newspaper ads/advertising websites: I want to be able to steer to the puppy owner's home to look the conditions like how the babies are raised and the conditions of the parents. I also really don't know who to trust, and I definitely don't want to have one shipped on a plane. I know this makes my mom sound obnoxious, but she's not. She's just really picky. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Should I just try to convince my mom to go with a shelter or a breeder?

Resolved Question: Found a maggot-like worm! Why and how did it appear?

This morning, I woke up and sat down in front of my dressing table, I got up and put something in the bin, when I went back to sit down, where I had been sitting (there was also a pair of trousers lain over the seat - on there was a maggot-like worm (approx. 10x4 mm) wriggling and squirming on my pair of trousers - not sure if i had been sitting on it, whether it had arrive off me but why has it appeared. Those trousers haven't been outdoors, and we don't have pets and I wash and shower regularly - it really scares me to think where it has grown from? From a medical, health, saftey and hygiene point, where has this arrive from? It's really worrying..... Also found one stuck to my hot water bottle and it's still alive, which means I must have slept with them - checked the bed sheets, but they seem ok...this is worrying...

Open Question: Teaching English in Japan with a large dog?

I have a BA in Asian Studies, a minor in History, talk semi-fluent Japanese, have been there twice, once as a family trip and once for school, and no job perspectives what-so-ever. (I live in the Toledo area, if by chance you have a job for me instead that would be even better.) I'm looking into teaching English in Japan, but I'm not sure where to look outside of JET and AEON. I've applied to AEON, but missed the deadline for JET, which is ok because I've heard it nearly impossible to receive into. My main concerns are what are good companies to look into, and what are the odds of any of them letting me bring my dog? I have a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd, and yes my parents offered to take care of him, but I'd rather bring him with me. I'm very attached to him and a year or more away from him would be difficult. I'm also curious about quarantine laws and time period and if there are any apartments that would allow a dog that big in Japan? I'm also curious about what company is best to go with? I have several friends in the Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagoya area, so ideally I'd like to end up in one of those areas, but I've heard it's uncommon to receive anywhere you wanted to tutor in, is that just a myth? If this isn't confusing enough my fiance has expressed interest in coming along too, but not necessarily teaching English, I'm not sure what he's planning to do. I have a lot of reservations about teaching English in Japan, because of my dog and my fiance, but at the same time I adore Japan and really want to spend time there, if not eventually move there. To complicate things further, I had a heart transplant ten years ago and know some companies offer health insurance, but do any cover prescription medical costs, and can I receive my prescriptions in Japan? Sorry everything is so confusing, but anymore information about companies to apply to or personal experiences with anyone who has brought their pet with them to Japan would be very helpful. Thank you.

Resolved Question: What is a good pet for a 6ftx2ftx2ft aquarium?

Due to needy health I'm no longer able to manage the very big water changes needed for my fish tank on a regular basis. I'd like to keep some other sort of pet in it, but it would have to be suitable for life in a 180 gallon glass tank. My initial thoughts are either rodents or reptiles (I have kept a pet corn snake for many years.) Before I go away and do some research I would be interested to look what ideas other people have.

Resolved Question: A year after my dog died, am still very sad when I remember him?

I had my pug for over 8 years. He slowly started to have health problems as a result of arthritis in his knee joints. Despite various treatments, he never got over it and his liver and kidneys began to give. I finally asked the vet to put him out of his misery in November last year. He was my steady companion during his short life, always following me around the home, even when it was painful for him to walk. I miss him so much. Sometimes I still sob. I feel guilty for not being able to help him live a better life. I can accept that this pain is based on a deep adore for him and that it may never go away. I wanted to ask others whose pets have died if they experienced a similar grief, or if they could share about their mourning process, too. @ Lauren: We've moved to a smaller apartment where pets are not allowed. I have my dog's ashes in an urn in our bedroom and I always tug out photos of him to remember what it was like to have him alive. Thank you for your answers--I look that our adore for our pets is so different from adore for humans. I guess that's what makes our relationships so special, because our adore is beyond words. I'll keep checking back for new answers. It makes me feel connected to other people, even if it's through sadness.

Open Question: Mold at work? Health risk I can't prove.?

Lately at work I have started to have some serious concerns about mold. I work at a Pet store and the room with every the fish system equipment floods pretty regularly, the flooding goes straight through the wall into the next room, so we have always suspected mold might become an issue. In the last week or so I have begun to occasionally odor something that smells more like puke than anything else I can name, co-workers have said its probably Mildew but we dont know for sure. Them last Thursday when in the room where the flooding comes from for about 20 minutes I got hit with a wave of nausea, it was pretty bad... I felt okay about two minutes after I had left the room but I was white as a ghost. Since then I have had the occasional headache both at work and at home, I dont receive headaches often. While I suspect mold is the culprit, if we have it, it's in a wall and I cant prove its there but I am really starting to worry that its making me sick but there is a chance I'm just sick, it is that time of year.. who knows right? I also had a non cease runny nose for months despite never having had alergies. I have told both my manger and the store manager. My manager says we cant do anything unless we can look it, at which point we will bleach it. The store manager will make note of it. I have considered getting an air borne bold test kit but they are too expensive and shouldn't be my expense or just going to a doctor but I dont know if the doctor would be able to tell me anything conclusive. What is the best way to approach this? My bosses will not go ahead and put holes in the wall just because I suspect something, the company I work for is not great at throwing money out there just cause there MIGHT be a problem. I could just go to the doctors but this would not be the best time financially to lose out on work. Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thanks =)

Resolved Question: Is this one of those puppy scams in cameroon?

Ok, i was looking for a puppy online and posted an ad on craigslist someone replied and i think its a scam just like every the puppy scams, the 'seller' said the pup is free but she wants me to pay for shipping. She is located in "Lowa state" and i have no clue what that is. The "Pet shipping agency" said to send payment via western union and to their headquarters in CAMEROON! The GERMAN SHEPHERD has been vet checked by our veterinarians and the health guaranteed, so the GERMAN SHEPHERD has been approved for shipment. You will have to pay the delivery cost for the GERMAN SHEPHERD before delivery to your home and that will cost you $250 . Our bank account is below auditing and do not accept bank transfer until after a week. You would have to make this payments to us via any Money Gram or Western Union service to our head quarters in CAMEROON since the flight that is responsible for the transportation of this GERMAN SHEPHERD will be coming from there and the pet couriers who will be responsible for this GERMAN SHEPHERD would be coming from there and also we have the Money Gram and Western Union agency at the airport in Cameroon. Payments is done only to the Director in charge of flights schedule. The Director's information you would need for the payments is as follows, Name : ..................DEUGUBUH FORBIN Country : ...............Cameroon State : ...............Douala City : .................Bonaberi Zip Code: ............0237 And the 'seller' is saying crp like Youre being warned i put the puppy in the agency you better pay now i just recieved an email from the 'agency' saying DEAR CLIENT WE WISH TO NOTIFY YOU THAT YOUR SELLER HAS JUST MAID A DEPOSIT OF $50 SO YOU ARE TO PAY $200 FOR YOU PET TO REACH YOU AND REMEMBER WE DON NOT KEEP PETS FOR LONG . IT IS HERE IN OUR AGENCY FOR SOME DAYS NOW AND YOUR SELLER LAST WORD IS (CONTACT HIM FOR THE LAST TIME AND receive BACK TO ME) YOUR PAYMENT DETAILS AS FOLLOWS YOU ARE TO PAY IN THIS ORDER USING YOUR NAME. Alright, sorry this is so long but im wondering if this is genuine or a scam? I think its a scam but if its real i dont want to really be bugging these people.

Voting Question: Do you think that pet owners should be offered an incentive to spay their dogs to encourage more people. ?

i just had my puppy spayed and microchipped. because she hadnt gone into heat yet it was much cheaper to have her done than what it would have been if she was a couple of months older and had already been into heat. despite of this though we recieved our $305 bill. as a responsible pet owner though i knew that i would have to pay for this to be done before i even started looking for a dog. but what about every these people who buy dogs and dont think ahead and then dont bother to receive their dog spayed because they think every they will receive out of it is a hefty vet bill. most people think they can prevent their dog from becoming pregnant just by locking her away when she is in heat but needless to say this doesnt really work out a lot of the time. and then they dont know about the bonuses for a dogs health from being spayed. So what I am asking is do you think there should be an incentive to people like this so they feel it would benefit them and not just be a huge moneygrabber? and what would you suggest it should be? ahh suzie are you sure you know what your talking about. i also happen to be australian. i know about the cheaper registration. but i thought they were only just trying to bring in the every dog must be microchipped laws and it wont be in effect for like 2 years. and breeding mix bred dogs is not illegal or any such thing. just frowned upon by a lot of people. thanks for the answer anyway though.

Most recently she started by asking "What nice of mood are you in?" and I said I was currently feeling really really good (either stable or on an "bi polar high") so she said great when should she arrive out to visit. I said I wasn't sure, I guessed she could pick a day." She immediately jumped on it and got herself a plane ticket for mid Jan. I'm worried that this wasn't the right thing for me to agree to. Now I have my possess problems piling up with extra medication costs in the $300 range and a pet possibly needing a 2nd surgery in 2 weeks.. not enough that it is my pet that i adore but thats more money and more stress. I can't think right... would it be nice to look my pal or should I tell her she caught me on a high when I wasn't able to make a good decision and took advantage when I said I was in a good mood. Thanks. Jared

Resolved Question: Dog eye problem! Any vets out there?

Hey yahoo people!! My dog has an eye problem. It just came up today. My dad let her outside to go do her thing and when she came back inside he put her in her kennel. He let her out a little while later to pet her and saw that her eye had drainage every over it and she refused to open it. When I got home I seperated her eye lids and she had that pink covering thing over her eye. I bribed her with a treat and she finally opened her eye and I saw that it didn't line up with her other eye. (her other eye is fine) I felt her nose as I have heard that that can tell you alot about the dog's health, and found that it is warm and dry. Her body is warm too, though weather that is because of something I don't know about or because she was sitting in front of our flame place I don't know. We do have some stray cats that run around outside our home that we feed, although they receive along with her fine. Most of them do anyway. I'm afraid that she may have gotten scratched by one of them, but she does'nt seem to have any scratches on her eye. She is now continuously trying to scratch at her eye with her front claws, and I am afraid that that might be messing it up worse. My mom was every for putting Visene in her eye and that that would clear it up, but I'm not so sure that it would be such a good idea, so I thought I would ask every of you. My parents are planning to take her to the vet tomorrow to receive her eye checked out, but because it is Thanksgiving I'm not sure that it will be open. So if there are any vets out there I would like to know if there is anything I could give her at home to help, like Visene, but I also have some doggie asprins as well, but I don't think that they would help her situation at every. I think I found why her eye was draining so bad! There was a big tick by her eye and it might have been affecting her sinuses! I think so anyway. Well, I got the tick off of her and now I only have to wait to look if it helped. We're still taking her to the vet tomorrow though. If we can.

Resolved Question: Spaying and Neutering policy - U.S. vs. U.K.?

I read the RSPCA website about their policy on spaying or neutering. I really had to dig to find it. http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RSPCA/RSPCARedirect&pg=DogsPetCare&marker=1&articleId=1152286835649 I also looked at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons on their policies pertaining to spaying and neutering of pet animals - and could find none. In the U.S., spaying and neutering is strongly advocated by most animal welfare agencies for population control and health reasons, local governments sometimes mandate it for pet animals or even more often, give big discounts on licenses to pet owners that spay or neuter. The American Veterinary Medical Association actively promotes spaying and neutering. The U.K. seems to have more relaxed position toward it and it seems as though it is less frequently done as a matter of course. Why the difference in policy? Tradition, fewer problems with overpopulation, less public acceptance? Other reasons? Also, I know there is a problem is needy breeding practices in the U.K. just as there is in the U.S., I was wondering if the puppy mill problem exists there as well, or if it is more of a backyard breeding situation. I would adore insight from people of both countries.

Resolved Question: What do you think about this essay?

In the United States, thirty-nine percent of households possess at least one dog, as well as nearly thirty-four percent of households possess at least one cat. Sadly, not every owners take responsibility for these dogs and cats. Unfortunately, a great number of these animals are dropped off to fend for themselves. The ASPCA is one specific organization that has many volunteers that donate their time to help prevent animal abandonment and deliver adequate care for these neglected animals. Due to the vast number of unknown stray animals, statistics that give information about the actual number of drop offs are unreliable. A couple of the most common causes of animal abandonment are financial difficulty and no time for the animal. When an owner is financially strained, they are usually struggling with paying bills or dealing with losing a job. Being financially strained can guide to having an inadequate home for the animal. Also, when an owner is working difficult to make a living, they could be traveling for extended periods of time or working long hours. In these specific situations, these owners may not have enough time to give their pets the care and adore they deserve. As a result, the dogs and cats may end up being dropped off on the side of the road. Then the animals suffer more than they should until a local shelter or a caring person finds them. There are other reasons, too, such as animals’ behavioral and health issues. When an animal has a chronic illness, they must go to the vet. Most of the time, they require procedures and medication that cost an immense amount of money which may also become a bane to the owners. When an animal is experiencing anxiety or other issues, they may start to deface the owner’s belongings. When an owner is struggling to train their pet, they occasionally give up and drop their animal off into the wild. To help reduce the number of abandoned animals, we should continue to lift awareness of the causes and realize the number of unknown strays that roam the country. Also, future owners should make sure they are willing to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal. It is impossible to home every animals humanely, but with the help of shelters and volunteers we can reduce the number of strays and lift the number of happily housed animals. There is simply not enough homes to care and adore these innocent animals which have been abandoned

Open Question: My chihuahua will not move or respond.?

My chihuahua is about 5 years old. He's been in good health and is not overweight. Like most chihuahuas he typically is very high energy and a definite handful. Today when I got home from work he wasn't at the door freaking out to look me as usual. every evening he has just laid in one spot and will not move. If i call his name or make noise or whatever he completely ignores it which is really unusual. He will only respond if I go up to him and pet him, and even that is very minimal. I let him out to use the bathroom earlier and he slowly got up and walked out and just stood there. He would not move once he stepped outside and would not respond to me so i eventually had to pick him up and bring him back in. Any ideas what could be wrong. I havent seen him toss up or anything, but he's definitely not feeling right.

Voting Question: Yeast Infection Survivors?! Please help!?

Our 11 month old Pit Bull, for a while, would turn his paw over and would try to bite the bottom of it. I never really thought anything of it, since some people said it could just be out of boredom. Still, I felt there was something more..... When we took him to the vet recently, for another reason (hives), we also discovered he has a little yeast going on in his right ear. The vet told us it wasn't serious, his overall ear was healthy. So he gave us medicated wipes to clean his ear with, he wanted to try this before prescribing a steroid. His ear is getting better, not entirlely gone; but hopefully will be soon. I totally forgot to mention his paw issue, since we were so focused on his hives at the moment... About a week ago, we were petting him while he was relaxed laying down; and I inspected his paws. In between his toes he has the same brownish looking pigment his ears have! So now i'm almost for sure about this being yeast as well. Whats worst, is that just two days ago we noticed him having the same issue going on around his jaw area! It's not very noticeable, but I know it's there and he itches there too. He tends to have that area of his jaw/bottom lip covered every the time since he has little skin rolls there; so that area unfortunately is always moist and covered by his upper lip flaps. I guess he's developing this in the areas that don't really breathe or air out in his body. We're taking him in sometime this week or next, I'm just really unhappy and worried thinking this could take a loooong time clearing up. It's not at every compared to/close to some of the really gross pictures of the needy dogs who have this condition in an advanced stage, but I don't even want to think it will receive there! Has your dog had this problem? If so: What were the health options? What was the healing process? What were the medications given? Were they effective? Vet charges? Anything else I need to know? Oh, and I should mention that I know sometimes food can play a role if not every. He eats Solid Gold Wolf King dog food, it doesn't carry every that nasty stuff that I've heard/read causes the issue. Its high quality ingredients... Thank for your help! I forgot to ask, is it contagious in any way to humans?

Resolved Question: I will soon be working with abused women here in Florida, no uniforms are allowed, how should I dress ect.?

I start working there this Tuesday from 8am to 4pm. My sister doesn't like it, but she wears over sized T-shirts mostly...who can blame here...anyway I have already bought this and had it over nighted and they said I should receive this on Monday: http://www.bebe.com/gp/product/B001AR8JDC/sr=1-6/qid=1227764858/ref=sr_1_6/183-9287034-1781447?ie=UTF8&fontColor=000000&node=1250736011&m=A2FMOXN01TSNYY&totalItemIn1Page=12&startIndex=0&displayPageNum=1&bbBrand=core&field-clothing-size=&keywords=&firstPageItemNum=0&title=&restPageHasColor=0&myViewID=embedded&displaySalePrice=1&displayItemNum=12&standardPageSize=12&size=12&rh=n%3A1250736011&page=1&bgColor= The outfit seems playful yet business like. I am some what nervous, but I like helping others. Everyday I help pet owners, like i told this lady to receive her dog put to snooze so she doesn't have to be depressed anymore, and I help people in the health section by giving quick resulting diets, and een here I look myself as a great role model. They said I will be talking to the women, and doing paper work. I have thought about sharing my struggles and how I made it like the time my puppy got hit by a truck and I was so unhappy for months, but moved on and got a fish...in other words life doesn't end just receive a new guy. Is my outfit ok? What else should I talk about? Ect. Open Question: Mandatory spay law in Los Angeles? Have you seen this?

I was just reading up on spaying females on a website and it was a very "pro spay" site (which is great), but then I read this paragraph: "Beginning April 2008, spaying of female dogs became mandatory in the city of Los Angeles. It is already mandatory for Culver City, Marina del Rey, and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Exceptions include law enforcement dogs, dogs currently in competition training, service dogs and dogs with a medical exemption. Fines start at $100. The city came to this resolution largely because of the huge expenses associated with its overcrowded shelter system and its a euthanasia rate of approximately 4000 unwanted dogs and cats PER MONTH. This problem comes down to one of population control; education has been inadequate to solve the problem as has simply charging $100 vs $10 to license unsterilized dogs. Spaying provides irreplaceable health benefits to the pet, convenience to the pet owner, benefit to the community, and it is now legally required." I had no idea. Am I just totally below a rock? Is there anywhere else that this is a law? Thanks to every! http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_the_canine_spay.html That's the website, in case anyone wanted to look at it. I certainly don't think I would call applause of this law idiotic, though I do look what you're saying. I am not decided on whether this is the best tactic or not but honestly, what better way is there? We every hate the overpopulation but we every claim there's nothing to be done? Certainly that can't be right. It absolutely may not be the best law ever implemented, but perhaps this is what we should be doing. Start trying things, look if they work. If not, we arrive up with another idea and so on and so forth, until we find the right solution. There may never be a totally "right" solution because there will always be people who will live "below the law", but I imagine there are a lot more people willing to live BY the law and do the right thing. every we can do is try, right? Just an opinion - you have some really great points (no one is getting a thumbs down from me!). I do believe though, that responsible breeders are still able to breed...they DID say that service dogs, competing dogs, law enforcement dogs and dogs with medical problems are exempt. Like I said, I don't know if this is the best tactic or not. I just recently became involved in the whole "rescue" aspect for animals so I am not familiar with what has already been tried and what has already failed. What if this does help? Is there even a possibility that it will? I guess the only way this will work is if someone is diligently monitoring every the stuff this law entails, as well as the numbers at animal shelters. Do they go up because people don't want to pay to spay? Or do they go down because law abiding, albeit ignorant, backyard breeders don't want to receive in trouble? Just a thought - keep the discussions coming! Scoop, I think show dogs fall below the category of "dogs in competition training". :-)

Resolved Question: What grade level is this paper?

I wrote this essay for school, and before I turn it in I would like to know if it is a good paper. What grade level do you think it is? Do you think it is good? My paper is on animal abandonment. In the United States of America, animal abandonment is caused by many different factors: financial difficulty, no time for the animal, animal’s health issues, behavioral issues, and an inadequate home. As Americans, we should strive to prevent and keep these animals from being abandoned. The ASPCA is one specific organization that has many volunteers that donate their time to help prevent animal abandonment and deliver adequate care for these renounced animals. People do not realize that there are not any reliable statistics for the number of animals that are abandoned each year because the number is so vast. An estimate of dogs and cats entering the shelter each year is about six to eight million , but the most devastating part is that out of this substantial number, three to four million are euthanized. A couple of the most common causes of animal abandonment are financial difficulty and no time for the animal. When an owner is financially strained, they are usually struggling with paying medical bills or dealing with losing a job. Being financially strained can guide to having an inadequate home or dearth of food for the animal. Also, when an owner is working difficult to make a living, they could be traveling for extended periods of time or working long hours. In these specific situations, these owners do not have enough time to give their pets the care and adore they deserve. As a result, the dogs and cats end up being dropped off on the side of the road, and the animals suffer more than they should until a local shelter or a caring person finds them. Do you have the right in today's society to let your dog have puppies? I am just curious on everyone thought's because this site seems to be very pro- spaying and neutering your dogs. I am pro spaying and neutering and the benefits to the pet population and pet's health from the surgery. But, in your opinion, is there anything "wrong" with a responsible owner working with a vet and letting the dog have pups?

Open Question: Heartworms, possible sarcoptic mange, and aggression - advice needed?

I adopted a dog from another lady who had rescued him. I knew he had been treated for heart worms with ivermectin. He had three shots over a period of three days after he was rescued from the shelter. (could be wrong on number of shots) When I took him to the vet they were concerned about his legs and ears because of some hair loss. A surface and deep scraping didn't reveal any mites but the vet said that the mites will move around after the scraping starts. They also did another heart worm test that came back positive. They were concerned because it had been a month after his shots. They said they would hold off on treating the heart worms with heart guard because they wanted to go ahead and treat the possible mange which also would be with a pill which contains ivermectin. On our way out of the vet he "greeted" a terrified maltese by attempting to bite his face. I know it wasn't his friendly pre-lick snap that he does to me because he was uncontrollable and growling. It seems anything smaller than him or anything that he could receive away with mistaking for a cat causes aggression. On my way back home after thanksgiving I pulled over into a gas station where there were two charles king cavaliers with their owner. He jumped over into the drivers side and went balistic. It's like he went into a frenzy as he didn't respond to anything I said or even recognize that he was using me for a seat. I became concerned for my safety as he was on top of me. I had to climb out from below him and leave through the passenger side door. When it is just the two of us he is a very loving dog but I know I have to consider everything. He is a 5 year old eskimo/samoyed mix. My stepdad says is my fault for getting a spitz mix. I have invested in a muzzle and I've started to establish myself as the pack leader. It appears to be working and he has responded well to basic obediance training but still goes into complete unresponsive frenzies. Money isn't a concern and I'm willing to do anything to ensure a 100% turn around in health and attitude. When do you hit the point with treating heartworm and agression that it would be better to euthanize? I also realize that I have a responsibility to the safety of other pet owners and pets around me regarding his aggression. What would you do in my shoes? **UPDATE** Finally got ahold of the vet that treated him. The lady that I got him from wasn't truthful about everything. The ivermectin was for the(now confirmed) mange. He was supposed to have another shot two weeks later but it seemed the lady that had him before me failed to do so. They must be expensive?? He had two other shots for the heartworm. The vet confirmed that he could test positive for a long time. Thank you every for your advice! I have a lot to consider.
